1943

Born in Tsurumi, Yokohama

1953

Joined drum and fife marching band

1957

Started to play in a band with friends and liked to play many instruments

1960

Decided to play as professional musician

1965

Started professional career

1967

Joined rock group The Samurais and toured Europe for one and a half years

1969

Began playing free improvisation with Motoharu Yoshizawa and Masayuke ‘Jojo’ Takayanagi in New Direction and also in duo with Mototeru Takagi

1971

Joined Chicago A.A.C.M.

1972 - 73

Stayed in Paris and played with many European musicians including Anthony Braxton’s Creative Orchestra and the Alan Shorter trio and the Bobby Few trio. Joined the group Emergency

1974

Travelled to various countries including Brazil and Indonesia.

1975

Formed own group Sabu Unit to explore his musical ideas

1976 - 78

Played in the duo Overhang Party with Kaoru Abe up until Abe’s death. -The duo was regarded at the time as the most powerful and concentrated music in Japan

1979

After an appearance at the Moers Jazz festival with the trio FMT there followed an extensive period of travel to Africa, Middle and Near East, India, Nepal, Thailand, The Philippines and Burma

1983

Appearance at festival in Wuppertal with butho master Kazuo Ohno

1986

European tour with Johannes Bauer, Peter Brotzmann and Hans Reichel

1988

Actuelle Music festival Victoriaville, Canada with Fred van Hove and Wadada Leo Smith

1985 - current

Inviting many musicians to play with in Japan including Misha Mengelberg, Derek Bailey, Wadada Leo Smith, Paul Rutherford, Sunny Murray and John Russell

1987

Met the founder of Watazumido, a master of life

1989

Festival WIM at Antwarpen- Belgium with Derek Bailey and Louis Sclavis

1991 - 92

Duo with Takehisa Kosugi

2001

Visit to Cuba
Solo and Duo with Wadada Leo Smith at California Institute of Art

Travel to Mongolia and tours of Korea
